Preserving our Coast
Beach Clean Up and Conservation Activities
Come rain or shine, the Arklow Coastcare Group come together every week to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in the great deal of back-braking work it takes to keep the coastline clean, especially during the warmer summer season. The Arklow Coastcare Group not only cleans and maintains the Arklow beaches but also maintains the dunes and hinterland.

Preventing Coastal Erosion

It is now recognised that our coast is a dynamic and moving shoreline. Weather, wind and tide are continually changing its shape. Arklow Coastcare approaches the problem of coastal erosion with local knowledge of the coastal environment and dune system.
Many past decisions affecting the coastlines were made without considerations of their effects on the wider environment. Arklow Coastcare regulary inspects and maintains the sand dunes of Arklow with the planting of marram grass that form covered dunes that prevent most sand moving or blowing away.

One of the most important things to realise with the coastal and beach environment is that it is dynamic, like the forces that shape it, so these environments are always changing. Accepting change can be a difficult to accept (such as the common perception that damage to established forests in storms is bad) but it is important to acknowledge that change is a natural and health part of this ecosystem, and helps to maintain biodiversity.
